The Brennan Brothers Carnival has been around since the early 1920s, a traveling show passed down from generation to generation, father to son, for many decades. The most recent proprietor of the carnival was an elderly man by the name of Thomas Brennan and his wife Abigail. Having no children of their own, they welcomed a young fourteen-year-old boy named Micah into their family after he had been found abandoned by his foster family late one evening on closing night.
It may have been wrong to do so, but they took him in as their own, having found that Micah had been passed around between foster families, neglected and abused his entire life. The pair felt an instant connection with him. Although at first he was a defiant little troublemaker with no respect for authority, he came to realize quickly that Thomas and Abigail were not like many of the adults he was used to... those who only took on foster parenting for the paycheck and very clearly not for the love of the child. They also came to find out that Micah wasn't like other boys his age. He was special... had a special gift that allowed him to literally be in two or more places at once.
The Brennans would have liked to adopt him officially, but they were more concerned about keeping him hidden, afraid that he would be taken away from them and put back into the system only to be released to another family that would mistreat him. So they took him on the road with them, finding that his ability to make multiple copies of himself was quite handy when it came to doing odd jobs around the carnival.
It was nearly a year and a half later when Abigail passed away and Thomas followed not even a month later, both from seemingly natural causes. The carnival was shut down because Micah, being only sixteen at the time, was not old enough to own the business, even though it had officially been left to him, as Thomas Brennan considered Micah to be his son and his heir. The entire carnival staff eventually moved on and left him to himself. He began spending his time trying to find other teen orphans and runaways who were special like him, all the while living in the carnival trailers and stealing food and supplies to survive.
When he finally turned eighteen, he took a copy of the deed to the carnival and of his father's will listing him as the beneficiary to the courts to make his ownership official, and with the help of the new young friends he had made the Brennan Brothers Carnival re-opened and has been traveling from town to town once again for the better part of a year now.
